The story takes place in the small bedroom community of West Richland which is a sort of a Cinderella city next to the three major cities serving the Hanford Nuclear Area during the 1970’s known as the Tri-Cities of Washington. The other three cities of Pasco, Kennewick and Richland have large police departments that more or less dwarf West Richland. The main character of the series, Curt Woods, is fictional while being based on the author’s personal experience.
The first book published in the series, The Chief Is Missing, happens later in the character’s career. This story would take place at the beginning of his career. He’s the new man on the department. He hasn’t attended the state police academy yet but he does have a college degree in Law Enforcement that comes in handy.
The story begins with the discovery of a murder.
